How to Become a Licensed Practical Nurse in Arizona

A licensed practical nurse (LPN) is a trained nurse who is able to perform procedures under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN). Licensed practical nurses usually need between 12 and 18 months of education, including clinical training, to be eligible to get the LPN credential.

Instructions

Step1

Find a training program that leads to eligibility to take the NCLEX LPN exam. Usually this would be a licensed practical nurse training program from a community college or vocational school, but some registered nurse programs offer the option to become licensed practical nurses after completing part of the registered nurse training program.

Step2

Take any necessary prerequisite science courses, then apply to the training program

of your choice. Note that many nurse education programs have highly competitive selection rounds for admission.

Step3

Complete the training program after you are accepted, then register for the NCLEX LPN exam.

Step4

Study for and pass the NCLEX LPN exam.

Step5

Submit a licensing application packet to the Arizona State Board of Nursing. The packet will need to include proof of your educational training and your score on the NCLEX LPN exam, as well as fingerprints and the appropriate fee.

Step6

Renew your license every five years, making sure to work at least 960 hours each five-year span.

Tips & Warnings

If you are a licensed LPN in another state, you can apply for an Arizona license by endorsement. This will require verification of your original license. You will also need to have completed your education within the past five years, have 960 hours or more of work experience within the past five years or complete a refresher training course within the past five years.
If you completed your LPN training in another country, you will need to take the NCLEX LPN exam and submit your score, including verification of your English proficiency, legal status in the U.S. and proof of your education in your country of origin.
